In an undergravel filter, air is pumped from the air pump or power head to an air stone or air diffuser which rests in the undergravel filter lift tube. The air forced through the air stone creates uniform bubbles in the column which changes the air pressure in the tube. This change in pressure creates a vacuum that pulls the water up and out of the column, thus creating the suction underneath the gravel bed. Adding carbon to your undergravel filter will remove metals such as copper, helps reduce odor and keeps the tank sparkling clean. Disposable carbon cartridges should be replaced every 2-3 weeks. The Refillable Carbon Cartridges allow you to add carbon into the chamber as needed. These items fit all Top Fin and Lee's undergravel filters.
